Effective Date: Fall Semester 2001.

Add: Page 178 after Human Religious Experience course listing and before Ancient Philosophy course listing, add:

214 Philosophy of Human Rights (3)
An analytical introduction to the concept of human rights. Readings will be drawn from both historical and contemporary philosophical sources. Fall.

Impact statement:
The course would serve as a core requirement in the proposed interdisciplinary human rights minor. The course will not affect any department other than Philosophy. A Philosophy of Human Rights course is scheduled as a Special Topics for Spring Semester 2001 and is ultimately intended to be taught yearly. Therefore, acceptance of the proposal should have no impact on the Philosophy Department's staffing needs.

Rationale:
Due to student interest in the topic of human rights, and the potential human rights minor on campus, a core course that analytically examines the concept of human rights would serve as a foundation to ensure proper critical preparation for more specialized interests.
