Statement of Faculty
Senate Action:
FWDC 5: Proposal
to Eliminate the Library, Information Resources & Technology Committee
(Revision
of SD5507S, SD07706F; Faculty Handbook 10.4.4)
Effective Date: Immediately
Delete: In
the Faculty Handbook
Section 10.4.4.
Rationale:
The Library, Information Resources & Technology
Committee (LIRTC) was formed to combine the efforts of previous separate
committees and task forces addressing academic computing, administrative
computing, the library, and instructional technology. At the time,
Information Technology Services (ITS), Ramsey Library, and Media Technology
reported to a single administrator. It was anticipated that LIRTC,
consisting of students, faculty, and administrators and ex officio members from
ITS and the library would wrestle with the strategic
use of scarce resources in a more holistic and effective manner than multiple,
self-interested committees competing for the same scraps. In fact, the
CIO/University Librarian who chaired the committee was never able to devote the
time and energy that would have been necessary to nurturing this somewhat
quixotic approach and the committee failed to meet even minimal expectations.
At this point and in the likely future, the library and
ITS report to separate administrators.
A proposal to create a library/instructional technology
committee will be submitted in a separate document.
