Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 54:                          Change Requirements for Mass Communication Minor

Effective Date:  Fall 2011

1.       Delete:         On page 202, under Minor in Mass Communication:

19 hours distributed as follows: MCOM 104; MCOM 201, or VMP 207 and 209; MCOM 301 or VMP 303; one course from MCOM 390, 490, 492; one 3-credit hour course selected from even-numbered MCOM courses at the 300-400 level; one 4-credit hour course selected from odd-numbered MCOM or VMP courses at the 300-400 level (note that 300-400 level VMP courses have VMP 209 as prerequisite). Students must earn a minimum 2.00 grade-point-average on all minor courses taken at UNC Asheville. One-half of the hours required for a minor must be completed at UNC Asheville, to include at least 6 semester hours of 300-400 level courses.

Add:              On page 202, in place of deleted entry:

20 hours distributed as follows: MCOM 104; MCOM 201 or VMP 205; MCOM 301, MCOM302 or VMP 303; MCOM 490 or 492; 9 hours selected from MCOM or VMP courses at the 300-400 level (note that many of these courses have MCOM 201 or VMP 205 as a prerequisite). Students must earn a minimum 2.00 grade-point-average on all minor courses taken at UNC Asheville. One-half of the hours required for a minor must be completed at UNC Asheville, to include at least 6 semester hours of 300-400 level courses.

Impact:

There will be no resource implications. This makes the editorial change of replacing VMP 207 and 209 with 205.  MCOM 390 is being removed as an option for one of the required electives, but may still be taken as part of the 9 hours of electives.

Rationale:

The new minor requirements are more clearly stated than the current ones. It modifies the language of elective choices being odd- and even-numbered as our current catalog methodology retains no meaningful distinction on this point. This was already corrected for major requirements in a previous APC proposal, and we are making the correction for the minor here.
