Broadcast Journalism (4)
Writing and
reporting for radio/television news; basic studies in the history of broadcast
journalism; the relationship between images and words. Course includes
extensive studio component. Prerequisites: VMP 207, 209; or permission of
instructor. Odd years Spring.
331 Broadcast Journalism (3)
Writing
and reporting for radio/television news; basic studies in the history of
broadcast journalism; the relationship between images and words. Course
includes extensive studio component. Prerequisites: MCOM 201, VMP 205 and
successful completion of the Concentration Entrance Exam for either Journalism
or Film and Visual Media; or permission of instructor. Spring.
Impact:
Editorially
changes the VMP 207 and 209 prerequisites to VMP 205 based on an earlier
document, adds MCOM 201 as a prerequisite, and
requires students to have passed the concentration entrance exam. Reducing the
credit hours for this and other production courses will give students more
schedule flexibility and will provide the opportunity to take more course
topics. The impact of the credit hour change is that students will get one less
credit for taking this class. For faculty, the laboratory and classroom
components will need reorganization. The impact of increasing or decreasing the
frequency of offering for individual courses is balanced in the overall
two-year plan of course offerings. The entire curriculum is offered in two
years, and no adjunct faculty are required for this.
Should adjunct funds become available, these will be used to increase sections
and/or reduce enrollments of MCOM 104, 201 and VMP 205, which are already
multiple-section, every-semester courses with enrollments of 30 to 40.
Rationale:
This
change reflects the previously proposed replacement of VMP 207 and 209 with VMP
205, and adds the required news writing course that should have been there all
along, as this is a journalism class, as well as a video class. Requiring the
entrance exam for upper level skills courses ensures that students have
mastered important skills in their earlier course work. Keeping the
"Instructor Permission" prerequisite will provide an opportunity for
the instructor to check the skill level of students from other programs to make
sure they are adequately prepared for the work of the course. Reducing the
credit hours for this and other production courses will give students more
schedule flexibility and will provide the opportunity to take more course
topics. Some courses in this proposal
are offered more often than in the past, some less often, and some are
eliminated. These changes in semester of offering will provide coherent
curriculum structure over time.
