Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 49:                                          Delete VMP 305;

                                                                                Add repeat option for VMP 303;

                                                                                Change title and description for VMP 307

Effective Date: Fall 2011

1.       Delete:         On page 206, the entry for VMP 305:

                305                 Video Workshop II (2)

Use of small-format video production equipment to achieve student competence as film and video producers. Prerequisite: VMP 303; or permission of instructor. Fall.

Impact:

None. Students will now be able to repeat 303 instead of taking both 303 and 305.

Rationale:

We propose to make both VMP 303 and 307 repeatable. The second workshop is difficult to schedule. Making the course repeatable eliminates the need for scheduling and load difficulties associated with offering two separate workshops. This will concentrate enrollment.

2.       Delete:         On page 206, the description for VMP 303:

                303         Video Workshop (2)

Use of small-format digital video production equipment to achieve competence in camera, lighting and editing skills. Prerequisite: VMP 207, 209; or permission of instructor. Spring.

        Add:              On page 206, in place of deleted entry:

                303         Video Workshop (2)

Use of small-format digital video production equipment to achieve competence in camera, lighting and editing skills. Course may be repeated once. Prerequisite: VMP 205 or permission of instructor. Fall and Spring.

Impact:

Prerequisite change keeps the catalog consistent. Making the course repeatable allows students to continue having a second 2-credit workshop. The impact of increasing or decreasing the frequency of offering for individual courses is balanced in the overall two-year plan of course offerings. The entire curriculum is offered in two years, and no adjunct faculty are required for this. Should adjunct funds become available, these will be used to increase sections and/or reduce enrollments of MCOM 104, 201 and VMP 205, which are already multiple-section, every-semester courses with enrollments of 30 to 40.

Rationale:

This change reflects the previously proposed substitution of VMP205 for VMP207 and 209. Making the course repeatable eliminates the need for scheduling and load difficulties associated with offering two separate workshops. Some courses in this proposal are offered more often than in the past, some less often, and some are eliminated. These changes in semester of offering will provide coherent curriculum structure over time.

3.       Delete:         On page 206, catalog listing for VMP 307:

                307         Video Workshop III (1)

Video and film production activities with an emphasis on video laboratory management and editing. Prerequisite: VMP 305. Fall and Spring.

        Add:              On page 203 in place of deleted entry:

                307         Video Workshop - Advanced (1)

Video and film production activities with an emphasis on video laboratory management and editing. Course may be repeated once. Prerequisites: VMP 205, 303 and successful completion of the Film and Visual Media Concentration Entrance Exam, or permission of instructor. (Grading is S/U). Fall and Spring.

Impact:

This change makes the course pass/fail, makes the prerequisite more flexible, and allows the course to be repeated once.  As a result, the course will be more accessible to students. The title change makes all three upper level workshops consistent.

Rationale:

Student performance in the course is based on participation in laboratory management activities, and is largely attendance measured, and grading on a pass/fail basis is more appropriate. The change in prerequisite helps insure that students who enroll are adequately prepared for the work of the course.
