Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 48: Delete
MCOM 311;
Add
S/U grading and allow for repeats in MCOM 301;
Change
title and description for MCOM 313
Effective Date: Fall 2011
1.
Delete: On page 202, the
entry for MCOM 311:
311 Newspaper
Workshop II (2)
Continuation
of MCOM 301.
Use of personal computers and small-format publication tools
to write, edit and produce a student-edited campus newspaper.
Prerequisites: MCOM 201, 301. Fall and Spring.
Impact:
None. Students will now be able to repeat MCOM 301
instead of taking both 301 and 311.
Rationale:
Below we propose to make both MCOM 301 and
313 repeatable. The second workshop is difficult to schedule. Making the course
repeatable eliminates the need for scheduling and load difficulties associated
with offering two separate workshops. This will concentrate enrollment.
2. Delete: On
page 202, catalog listing for MCOM 301:
301 Newspaper Workshop (2)
Use of personal
computers and small-format publication tools to write, edit and produce a
student-edited campus newspaper. Prerequisite: MCOM 201; or permission of
instructor. Fall and Spring.
Add: On page 202, in place of
deleted entry:
301 Newspaper Workshop (2)
Use of personal
computers and small-format publication tools to write, edit and produce a
student-edited campus newspaper. Course may be repeated once. Prerequisite:
MCOM 201 or permission of instructor. (Grading is S/U). Fall and Spring.
Impact:
This
change makes the course pass/fail and allows it to be repeated one time.
Resource Impact: Eliminating the Workshop II course makes room for offering
this course each semester.
Rationale:
Making
the course repeatable eliminates the need for MCOM 311, and the scheduling and
load difficulties associated with offering two separate workshops. This will
concentrate enrollment into the one course.
Student
performance in the course is evaluated weekly by means of student peer reviews.
Instructor critique is necessarily broad, and grading on a pass/fail basis is
more appropriate.
3. Delete: On
page 203, catalog listing for MCOM 313:
313 Newspaper Workshop III (1)
Continuation of
MCOM 311.
Use of personal computers and small-format publication tools
to write, edit and produce a student-edited campus newspaper.
Prerequisite: MCOM 311. Fall and Spring.
Add: On page 203 in place of deleted entry:
313 Newspaper Workshop-Advanced (1)
Continuation of
MCOM 301.
Use of personal computers and small-format publication tools
to write, edit and produce a student-edited campus newspaper. Emphasis on editorial staff work. Course may be repeated
once. Prerequisites: MCOM 201, 301, and successful completion of Journalism
Concentration Entrance Exam, or permission of instructor. (Grading is S/U).
Fall and Spring.
Impact:
This
change makes the course pass/fail and requires students to have passed the
entrance exam for the Journalism concentration in order to take the course. It
also allows the course to be repeated once. Making the course repeatable
eliminates the need for MCOM 311.
Rationale:
Student
performance in the course is evaluated weekly by means of student peer reviews.
Instructor critique is necessarily broad, and grading on a pass/fail basis is
more appropriate.
