Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 47: Add new workshops for
Commercial Media, MCOM 302 and 304
Effective
Date: Fall 2011
1.
Add: On page 202, new listing for MCOM 302, Commercial Media Workshop (2)
302 Commercial
Media Workshop (2)
Incorporates all tactical
aspects of mass communication - writing, video, photography, desktop publishing
software and social media platforms - to produce traditional and social media
public relations and/or advertising materials for an organization. Course may be
repeated once. Prerequisite: MCOM 201 or permission of instructor. (Grading is
S/U). Fall and Spring.
Impact:
The
addition of this course will shift enrollment from MCOM 301 for students in the
Commercial Media Concentration, lightening the instructor load in that course
to a manageable level. This course properly fits the load distribution of the
responsible faculty member.
Rationale:
Students
in the Commercial Media Concentration need to have a workshop requirement
specific to the skills and applications of their area. Making the course
repeatable eliminates the need for scheduling and load difficulties associated
with offering two separate workshops. This will concentrate enrollment. Student
performance in this course is graded largely on attendance, peer evaluation,
and project participation, and grading on a pass/fail basis is appropriate.
2. Add: On
page 202, new listing for MCOM 304,
Commercial Media Workshop - Advanced (1)
304 Commercial Media Workshop - Advanced (1)
Continuation of
MCOM 302 with the addition of a strategic communication plan for production
materials and specific project work. Course may be repeated once.
Prerequisites: MCOM 201, 302 and successful completion of Journalism
Concentration Entrance Exam, or permission of instructor. (Grading is S/U).
Fall and Spring.
Impact:
The
addition of this course will shift enrollment from MCOM 313 for students in the
Commercial Media Concentration, lightening the instructor load in that course
to a manageable level. This course properly fits the load distribution of the
responsible faculty member.
Rationale:
Students
in the Commercial Media Concentration need to have a workshop requirement
specific to the skills and applications of their area. The prerequisite helps
insure that students who enroll are adequately prepared for the work of the
course. This will concentrate enrollment. Student performance in this course is
graded largely on attendance, peer evaluation, and project participation, and
grading on a pass/fail basis is appropriate.
