345 Public Relations Cases and Campaigns
(3)
This course introduces students
to the principles and practices of public relations through the examination of
public relations theories and successful public relations operations. Student
projects focus on ways to identify special publics as well as methods for
planning and executing a public relations program. The course also covers
ethics issues faced by public relations professionals. Prerequisite: MCOM 104;
or permission of instructor. Spring.
Add: On page 203,
in place of deleted entry:
346 Crisis Communications and Public
Relations Campaigns (3)
This course examines seminal events
influencing crisis communications and strategic planning for public relations
campaigns. Prerequisite: MCOM 104 or permission of instructor. Spring.
Impact:
These
changes are refinements to an existing course to meet changes and innovation in
the Public Relations field and to accommodate an updating of our Public
Relations curriculum since a PR expert has recently joined the full-time
faculty. Resource Impact: None as the course remains the same number of credit
hours, is offered with the same frequency, and utilizes the same supporting
resources.
Rationale:
Changes
in public relations practice require an updating of the course description to
best serve our students.

Impact:
Students
will have a clearer idea about what the class teaches them. The impact of
increasing or decreasing the frequency of offering for individual courses is
balanced in the overall two-year plan of course offerings. The entire curriculum
is offered in two years, and no adjunct faculty are
required for this. Should adjunct funds become available, these will be used to
increase sections and/or reduce enrollments of MCOM 104, 201 and VMP 205, which
are already multiple-section, every-semester courses with enrollments of 30 to
40.
Rationale:
The
new title better reflects the actual content of the course, which teaches the
style of writing appearing in magazines, as well as other publications. Some
courses in this proposal are offered more often than in the past, some less
often, and some are eliminated. These changes in semester of offering will
provide coherent curriculum structure over time.
