Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 16: Replace CSCI 244 with
CSCI 185
Effective
Date: Fall 2011
1. Delete: On page 106, the entry for CSCI 244:
244 Internet Client-Side Technology (3)
An intermediate class extending
the fundamentals of Web page design. Topics include advanced HTML and the
document object model (DOM), dynamic Web pages and style sheets. Prerequisite:
CSCI 107. Fall.
Add: On
page 106, new entry for CSCI 185:
185 Internet Client-Side Technology (3)
The technology
of web documents. Topics include style sheets, dynamic content, database
interface, scripting languages, and event handling. Prerequisite: CSCI 107 or
MMAS 121. See department chair.
Impact:
CSCI 185 is a
replacement for CSCI 244. The faculty member who taught this course retired
last year, and the department has not been able to offer the course since a
replacement faculty member hasn’t been hired.
It is anticipated that the department will hire for the position this
year, in which case we would be able to offer this course again. The course has
been frequently requested by students in CSCI and MMAS.
Rationale:
The course is being
renumbered to reflect that it is appropriate for first-year students and is
considered an introductory programming course, similar to the proposed
CSCI 181 and 182. The new description should clarify the differences
between this course, which focuses on CSCI issues such as control and
representation, with courses in the MMAS program that emphasize aesthetic
development.
