Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 13:                                                          Delete  CSCI 142

Effective Date:   Fall 2011

1.       Delete:         On page 106, the entry for CSCI 142:

                      142           Computer Programming I (FORTRAN) (3)

Computer programming using FOTRAN.  Programming examples illustrating engineering, scientific and commercial applications.  Prerequisite: MATH 167 or equivalent.  See department chair.

Impact:

ATMS used to list CSCI 142 as an alternative to CSCI 201; however, they now offer their own FORTRAN programming course, ATMS 230, FORTRAN for Meteorologists.  Before ATMS introduced ATMS 230, ATMS majors were required to take either CSCI 142 or CSCI 201.  However, few of their majors chose CSCI 142 and consequently it has not been offered since Spring 2006.

Rationale:

Several years ago, FORTRAN was considered the programming language for scientists and engineers.  Today, numeric programming is being done on a wide variety of programming languages, including C, SciPy (Python), Java, MATLAB,  and Mathematica.  In this environment, it would be best for the Computer Science department to teach application-oriented computing courses rather than courses focused on specific programming languages.
