Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 81:                                          Delete ATMS 105, replacing it with ATMS 111 and 113, Understanding the Atmosphere

Effective Date: Fall 2010

1.       Delete:     On page 79, the entry for ATMS 105:

105     Introduction to Atmospheric Sciences (5)

An introduction to meteorology and climatology with laboratory. Topics include fundamentals of physical processes and weather systems, climatological principles, the historical role of weather and climate, and the influence of weather and climate on modern society. Prerequisite: MATH 155 or equivalent. (Students may not receive credit for both ATMS 103 and 105.) See department chair.

2. Add:                 On page 79, new course ATMS 111, Understanding the Atmosphere Lab:

111     Understanding the Atmosphere Lab (1)

Introduction to meteorology lab. A significant portion of the laboratory sessions will be spent outside observing weather elements. Corequisite: ATMS 113. Fall.

3. Add:                 On page 79, new course, Understanding the Atmosphere:

                            113     Understanding the Atmosphere (3)

An introduction to meteorology and climatology. This course focuses on the basics of understanding the weather, including how weather observations are made and used. Prerequisite: MATH 155 or equivalent. Atmospheric science majors may substitute ATMS 113 for ATMS 103. (Students may not receive credit for both ATMS 103 and 113.) Fall.

Impact Statement:

These courses will replace ATMS 105 as an option for completing the laboratory natural science requirement for non-ATMS majors and for completing an introduction to meteorology course for students majoring in atmospheric sciences. Plans are to teach one less section of 103 and occasionally teach one less elective to free up time. Consolidation of the department research course sections offered will free up sufficient faculty resources to deliver 111.  There is no change to the number of hours required for graduation in either the Climatology or Weather Forecasting concentration by ATMS majors. This course offering will not require additional ATMS resources.

Rationale:

The five credit hour ATMS 105 course has become obsolete and proved unpopular with students of all backgrounds. The replacement course with the separate designated laboratory section puts the ATMS laboratory in natural sciences offering in line with those of other departments. All faculty in the atmospheric sciences department are in agreement with this proposal.
