Document 68: Change course descriptions
for HWP 225 and HWP 310
1. Delete: On page 155, the description for HWP 225, Nutrition and Lifestyle:
An introduction to the principles of diet
and nutrition science, this course addresses recent issues and controversies on
ways that nutrition and diet can promote health and prevent disease. Other
topics of interest include multi-cultural views of diet and nutrition, herbs
and dietary supplements, and nutrition for activity and exercise. Prerequisite:
HWP 153 or 154 or 155. Fall.
Add: On page 155, in place of deleted entry:
An introduction to the principles of
nutrition science. This course addresses nutrients and how they interact with
the body, as well as issues and controversies on how eating habits can promote
health and prevent disease. Other topics covered include food and the
environment, nutrition and exercise, changing nutritional needs over the course
of the life, and the tradition of food as medicine. Fall or Spring.
Impact:
This course has been offered 2 to 3 times a
year for the last 4 and a half years. No change in frequency or faculty time is
expected. Since the prerequisite is a required ILS core course, removing it
should have no impact on access or enrollment.
Rationale:
The prerequisite course did not provide
necessary content for students in taking this course so it was deleted. The
description was updated to better match current course content and learning
outcomes.
2. Delete:
On
page 156, the description for HWP 310,
Community Outreach and Health Promotion:
Essential
strategies for determining prevention-related needs for specific populations,
designing culturally and educationally appropriate interventions/services, and
implementing and evaluating health promotion/disease prevention programs. Use
of health risk appraisals to establish baseline and evaluation data and as a
motivational tool is reviewed. Principles and efficacy of lifestyle coaching is
stressed; extensive role playing. Additional emphasis is placed on learning how
to develop and adapt health education programs, materials, and oral
communications to reach audiences of differing literacy levels and cultural
backgrounds in an effort to eliminate health disparities among race and class,
and to serve an aging population. Prerequisite: HWP 153 or 154 or 155; Pre- or
corequisites: SOC 221, 312. Spring.
Add: On page 156, in place of deleted

oral competency in this course. A grade of C or better is required to graduate.
Prerequisites: HWP 190, and either HWP 250 or 350. Fall and Spring.
Impact:
Course is currently taught twice a year;
this change in prerequisites or description is not anticipated to impact
staffing or resources. This change is not anticipated to change time to
graduation as these two prerequisites are required for the HWP major though it
may impact the order in which courses are taken. This change in prerequisites
may further limit this course to HWP majors and minors.
Rationale:
The change in prerequisites is necessary
for students to be prepared for the course content and is in keeping with
overall changes in the HWP major curriculum. The change in the course
description is in keeping with actual course content. The course will now be
used to demonstrate oral competency.
