Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 67: Change
prerequisites for HWP 335, HWP 380, HWP 390
Effective
Date: Fall 2010
1. Delete: On page157, the prerequisites for HWP 335, Health Communication:
Prerequisites: One
course from HWP 153 or 154 or 155, and junior standing.
Add: On
page 157, in place of deleted entry:
Prerequisites: HWP
250 or 350.
Impact:
Course is currently taught once a year.
This change in prerequisites is not anticipated to impact staffing or resources
or time to graduation. Changing the prerequisites will make it more likely that
students will take this course in their junior or senior years and may reduce
the number of non-majors who enroll in it.
Rationale:
The change in prerequisites is necessary
for students to be prepared for the course content and is in keeping with
overall changes in the HWP major curriculum.
2.
Delete: On page 158, the prerequisite for HWP 380, Internship in Health and Wellness
Promotion:
Prerequisites: HWP
152, 153, 154, or 155; and HWP 225.
Add: On page 158, in place of deleted
entry:
Prerequisites: HWP
190. Current certification in CPR is required.
Impact:
We previously dropped the 1-credit hour HWP
182 course from the HWP major requirements that ensured CPR certification prior
to graduation. Students need to be certified for their internship placements.
We found that most students were already certified so requiring HWP 182 was
unnecessary. We still offer this course and plan to offer weekend and evening
opportunities (taught by community organization) to complete this certification
so it should not impact time to graduation for those students who have not
previously sought certification.
Rationale:
The addition of the HWP 190 introduction
course is now a prerequisite for students taking HWP 380. HWP 190 will prepare students to make a
thoughtful selection of an internship site based upon the information gained in
this class, and most internship sites now require basic CPR certification. The
deletion of HWP 225 is necessary since that is now an elective option for
majors.
3.
Add: On page 158, in the description for HWP 390, Pre-Health Professions Internship,
before Fall:
Current
certification in CPR is required.
Impact:
Students need to be certified for their
internship placements. We find that most students are already certified. We
still offer a 1 credit hour certification course and plan to offer weekend and
evening opportunities (taught by community organization) to complete this
certification so it should not impact time to graduation for those students who
have not previously sought certification.
Rationale:
Most
internship sites require basic CPR certification.
