Effective
Date: Fall 2010

first paragraph of the opening narrative:
The Department of Health and Wellness offers diverse and flexible
programs designed to help students live healthier and more balanced and
meaningful lives. Students may choose to major or minor in Health and Wellness
Promotion and pursue careers in worksite wellness, hospital-based wellness
programs, community health centers, retirement and nursing home wellness
programs, commercial and not for-profit health, fitness, and recreation
centers, and other related areas. Students who receive a B.S. with a major in
Health and Wellness Promotion may choose to pursue graduate and/or professional
studies in Health Promotion, Exercise Physiology, Nutrition, Health Education,
Gerontology, Public Health, Medicine and other health-related professional
programs. Students interested in graduate school should be aware of additional
course work required for admission to these programs that may not be required
for the Health and Wellness Promotion major. Pre-medicine students may choose
any major and should contact the Pre-Health Professions Program Coordinator for
additional information.

The Department of Health and Wellness offers diverse and flexible programs
designed to help students live healthier, more balanced and meaningful lives. The curriculum for
the major or minor in Health and Wellness Promotion emphasizes multi-level
programs aimed at the promotion of wellness throughout a lifetime. Students may pursue careers in
worksite wellness, hospital-based wellness programs, community health centers,
retirement and nursing home wellness programs, commercial and not-for-profit
health, fitness, and recreation centers, and other related areas. Students
may also choose to major in Health and Wellness Promotion and complete the K-6
teaching licensure program, in preparation to teach health in elementary
schools. Students who receive a B.S. with a
major in Health and Wellness Promotion may choose to pursue graduate and/or
professional studies in areas such as Health Promotion, Exercise Physiology,
Nutrition, Health Education, Gerontology, Public Health, or Medicine. Students
interested in graduate school should be aware of additional course work
required for admission to these programs that may not be required for the
Health and Wellness Promotion major.
Impact:
The changes serve to clarify the
opportunities available with a Health and Wellness Promotion major while
continuing to allow flexibility and are in keeping with proposed programming
changes.
Rationale:
Adding a sentence to emphasize that students may complete K-6 licensure may help to steer
students toward this area. Student interest in this area has grown with the
recognition of the need for health education in the primary schools to
appropriately address the epidemic of childhood obesity.

page 146, the second paragraph in the opening narrative:
The Health and
Wellness Department also offers minors in Health and Wellness
Promotion, Dance and Sports Medicine, and
offers a Pre-Health Professions Program. The minor in Dance provides students
the opportunity to acquire and refine the technical skills necessary to realize
the broadest possible range of movement options, develop their own capacity for
expression through dance, understand the connections among the various fields
of study involved with dance production, acquire experience as teachers,
performers and choreographers and prepare for advanced study in Dance and other
related arts. The minor in Sports Medicine places an emphasis on the treatment
and prevention of athletic and movement-related injuries. In addition, the
Sports Medicine minor provides background for graduate study in Athletic
Training, Physical Therapy, and other health sciences. The Pre-Health
Professions Program provides numerous opportunities for students to learn more
about the broad array of health care career options and assists them in
successfully preparing for graduate or professional program admissions.

The Health and
Wellness Department also participates in the Pre-Health Professions Program and
provides a holistic approach to developing a broad level of knowledge and
skills as it pertains to the delivery of health care. The Pre-Health
Professions Program provides opportunities for students to learn more about the
broad array of health care career options and guides them in successfully
preparing for graduate or professional program admissions. Pre-medicine
students and those interested in allied health careers (pre-health professions)
may major in any discipline. They should complete the Pre-Health Professions
program with assistance from their advisor or from an advisor in the Department
of Health and Wellness.
Impact:
This change in programmatic description
better reflects the department offerings and decreases the number of courses
that need to be taught on a regular basis due to the deletion of the Sports
Medicine minor.
Rationale:
Last
year, the Sports Medicine minor was deleted from our program due to lack of
staffing and the inability to achieve accreditation, thus the deletion of any
reference to the Sports Medicine minor is necessary and reflective of current
programs. The Pre-Health Professions program continues though it no longer has
a director. Students will now be advised in their home departments or by health
and wellness faculty on how to complete this program. Allied health careers
(such as Physical Therapists, Physician Assistants, etc) have been included so
that students are aware of the possibility to pursue graduate studies in these
areas with proper advising.
