APC Document 64:                          Change titles and course descriptions for HW 100, 101, 102, 103

 

Effective Date: Fall 2010

 

1.       Delete:         On page 151, the entry for HW 100:

 

100         Introduction to Rock Climbing (1)

An introduction to rock climbing. The course includes rock climbing exercises that concentrate on focus, endurance, power-endurance and power. It also incorporates activities to improve overall fitness. See department chair.

 

Add:              On page 151, in place of deleted entry:

 

100         Essentials of Rock Climbing (1)

An introduction to rock climbing skills, safety techniques and terminology. Discussion includes the nature of the activity and the ways in which the activity contributes to healthy lifestyles throughout the lifespan. The course requires field trips outside of class time.  See department chair.

Impact: 

There is no change in staffing or resources needed, so no impact is expected.

101         Hiking, Camping and Orienteering (1)

An introduction to the outdoor educational activities of backpacking, camping and orienteering with an emphasis on the achievement of lifetime fitness and wellness. Activities may include an overnight backpacking/camping trip. See department chair.

 

Add:              On page 151, in place of deleted entry:

 

101         Essentials of Backpacking (1)

An introduction to the outdoor educational activities of backpacking, which includes hiking, camping and orienteering. Discussion includes the contribution backpacking for leisure makes to healthy lifestyles in modern U.S. society. The course may require field trips outside of class time, and a camping trip as the capstone experience for the course. See department chair.

The focus will be on navigation skills, towing, rescuing and rolling and aims to give kayakers the confidence to kayak on camping trips and in unfamiliar waters. See department chair.

Designed for beginning kayakers and canoers who want to develop their paddling skills as a means to include paddling in a lifetime fitness plan. The course will require field trips outside of class time. See department chair.
