of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 59: Change
requirements for major and minor in Spanish
Effective Date: Fall 2010
1.
Delete: On page 263,
the entry under Major in Spanish:
I.
Required courses in the
major—27 hours including SPAN 300, 310, 320, 330, 332; 481
or 482; 3 additional hours at 300-400 level; 6
additional hours at the 400 level.
II.
Required courses outside the
major—None.
III.
Foreign language
requirement—Satisfied by major courses in Spanish.
IV.
Special departmental
requirements—Oral competency: oral competency will be
evaluated at the end of SPAN 300. Capstone
project: competency in Spanish will be
demonstrated by a capstone project consisting of
research plus oral and written
presentations on Spanish language, literature or
civilization, to be carried out in one of
the 400-level courses, as approved by the
department chair. Students must demonstrate
satisfactory oral competency before undertaking
the capstone project. Computer
competency: students demonstrate computer
competency through satisfactory
completion of the capstone project.
Add: On page 263, in place of
deleted entry:
I.
Required courses in the
major—27 hours including SPAN 300, 310, 330, 332, 440, 498; one course from 481
or 482; 3 additional hours at 300-400 level; 3 additional hours at the 400
level.
II.
Required courses outside the
major—None.
III.
Other departmental
requirements—Successful completion of SPAN 300 fulfills the oral competency
requirement. Students will demonstrate major and computer
competency in SPAN 498 through research plus oral and written presentations in
Spanish on aspects of Hispanic cultures. A
grade of C or better is required in SPAN 498 to graduate.
Impact Statement:
Total hours
required for majors remain the same. Majors will now have six hours of
electives instead of nine hours, and will satisfy competencies in established
courses.
Rationale:
Students in our
program need more instruction in grammar and composition at an upper level.
Requiring SPAN 440 will help meet this need. Requiring a specific senior
capstone course provides students with a formal specified environment for
demonstrating competency.
2.
Delete: On page 263, under Minor in
Spanish:

Required: SPAN 300, 310, 320; 330 or

least 3 hours at the 400 level.
