Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 42: Remove the repeat
option for Math 381
Effective Date: Fall 2010
1. Delete: On page 215, in the
description for MATH 381, Problems in Mathematics:
The course may be repeated for credit.
Impact:
Since it was
extremely rare that a student took this class twice, this change will have little impact on the
department’s Students.
Rationale:
MATH 381 is a
one-hour class that has two objectives. The first is to give students
experience in solving non-conventional mathematical problems taken from a
variety of topics that are often not addressed in standard courses. The second
objective is to give students experience in presenting mathematics to their
peers, thus preparing them for the department’s Senior Seminar. Allowing
students to retake the class implies that the instructor must offer a different
set of topics each year. This however is not current practice, and retaking the
class would not be appropriate.
2. Delete: On page 213, under Minor in Mathematics, third sentence:
No more
than one credit in MATH 381 and one credit from MATH 480 can be used as part of
the 21 hours.
Impact:
None.
Rationale:
Students minoring in Math
were not repeating these courses to fulfill the requirements for the minor.
Since the repeat option has been removed from MATH 381, the notation is no
longer needed.
