Document 39: Delete
EDUC 396 and 496;
Change description and credit hours for
EDUC 455;
Add new course, EDUC 456
Effective
Date: Fall 2010
1. Delete: On
page 127, the entire entry for EDUC 396:
396 Research Methods in Education, BK–12 (1)
Emphasizes the modality and content essential to
research through formulation of
introductory sections, including the review of literature and design of the study.
To be taken as part of the Professional Year prior to the Student
Teaching semester (EDUC 455, 496). Corequisite: final
methods courses in area of licensure. Fall and Spring.
2. Delete: On
page 127, the entire entry for EDUC 496:
496 Directed Research in Education, BK–12 (2)
During student teaching, students implement the research design
constructed in EDUC 396. Includes the final research paper,
and an oral presentation of the research study at the Undergraduate Research
Symposium. Prerequisite: final methods courses in area of licensure,
EDUC 396, and admission to the student teaching experience. Fall and Spring.
Impact:
EDUC 396 and 496 are being eliminated and replaced by EDUC 456. This
will cause an addition of one semester hour to staffing needs. All faculty in the department can teach EDUC 456, and therefore,
additional faculty will not be required to staff the course.
Rationale:
EDUC 396 and 496 are being replaced by EDUC 456 to emphasize the need
for candidates to be proactive in their professional development and in their
interactions with colleagues, students’ families, and the educational community
as a whole. In this course, candidates will be required to create two of the
electronic evidences that will be required for them to be recommended for
licensure by the NC Department of Public Instruction.
3. Delete: On page 127, the entry for EDUC 455:
455
Student Teaching and Seminar (6)
Emphasizes full-time involvement of students in a
cooperating elementary, middle
and/or secondary school as appropriate to area/level of licensure desired. This
involvement requires reporting to the schools on opening day and includes observing,
assisting the cooperating teacher and eventual full-time assumption of teaching
duties which are gradually phased out near the end of the UNC Asheville
semester. The seminar meets once per week for two hours. Prerequisites: final
methods course in area of licensure, EDUC 390 or 396, and admission to the
student teaching semester. Fall and Spring. (Grading:
S/U)
Add: On page 127, in place
of deleted entry:
455
Student Teaching and Seminar (8)
Emphasizes
full-time involvement of students in a cooperating elementary, middle
and/or secondary school as appropriate to
area/level of licensure desired. This
involvement
requires reporting to the schools on opening day and includes observing,
assisting the cooperating teacher and eventual full-time assumption of teaching
duties which are gradually phased out near the end of the UNC Asheville
semester. The seminar meets once per week for two hours. To be taken
concurrently with EDUC 456.
Prerequisites: final methods course in area of licensure and admission
to the student teaching semester. Fall and Spring.
(Grading: S/U)
4. Add: On page 127, new course, EDUC 456:
456 The
Teacher as a 21st Century Professional, K-12 (4)
To continue to
grow as teacher-leaders, teachers must know their students and the communities
served by their schools, know their colleagues and other members of the
profession, and develop habits as lifelong professional learners. Candidates
will create and implement their own professional development plan, engage with
their students’ families and communities, and interact with peers and
colleagues around current educational topics. To be taken concurrently with
EDUC 455. Fall and Spring.
Impact:
Changing EDUC 455 from 6 hours to 8 hours will have no impact on
staffing. The change in hours reflects the full time commitment required of
student teachers. EDUC 396 and 496 are being eliminated and replaced by EDUC
456. This will cause an addition of one semester hour to staffing needs. All faculty in the
department can teach EDUC 456, and therefore, additional faculty will not be
required to staff the course.
Rationale:
EDUC 455 has been increased to 8 credit hours and a new course EDUC 456
with 4 semester hours of credit has been created. This will make the student teaching semester
12 credit hours. This addition of hours is required so that candidates will be
counted as full-time students. Candidates will extend their twelve-week
clinical experience through pre-clinical and post clinical observation,
reflection, research, and professional development activities. Changing student
teaching to full-time status will not only reflect the work of candidates but
will also facilitate insurance and financial aid for them.
EDUC 496, along with EDUC 396, will be replaced by EDUC 456 to emphasize
the need for candidates to be proactive in their professional development and
in their interactions with colleagues, students’ families, and the educational
community as a whole. In this course, candidates will be required to create two
of the electronic evidences that will be required for them to be recommended
for licensure by the NC Department of Public Instruction.
