Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 31: Add
new course, LIT 340, Internship
Effective Date: Fall 2010
1. Add: On page 188, new course LIT
340:
340 Internship (1-3)
Offers opportunities for supervised work in professional settings. Students gain experience in fields including editing, publishing and
bookselling. May be repeated once for a maximum of 4 credit
hours. Will not fulfill Literature & Language
elective requirements. Prerequisites: minimum 3.0 GPA and a declared
major in Literature & Language. See department chair.
Impact Statement:
There should be
no impact on the resources and staffing of the Literature and Language
Department. Supervising students in an internship program (currently as LIT
373) is already part of the regular departmental service load.
Rationale:
We need a
regular course for which interns can register each semester without having a
special section of LIT 373 added for each student. A course with variable hours
streamlines both the registration process and our department’s management of
internships. These internship opportunities allow our students to experience
the variety of career paths that await them as literature majors. The program
further helps our department to maintain important ties with the Asheville
literary community.
