Add: On

I.
Required courses in the program—38 hours:
ART 110, 111; ARTH 201, 202, 480, 484, 485; 12 hours
of 300-400 level ARTH courses; and 3 additional ARTH hours at the 400-level.
Courses from other departments may be substituted with prior approval of the
department chair. Of the 15 elective hours, 3 hours must be chosen from Ancient
and Medieval art history; 3 hours from Renaissance and Baroque art history; 3
hours from Modern and Contemporary art history; and 3 hours from African, Asian
and Latin American art history.
III. Other
departmental requirements—
Major competency is
demonstrated by successful completion of the capstone project in ARTH 484 and
ARTH 485 with a grade of C or better. The capstone
project consists of in-depth research, a final paper, and an oral presentation
on an approved topic. Oral and computer competency are demonstrated by
successful completion of ARTH 480.
Impact:
Department course
offerings are being restructured to shift students to under-enrolled
courses.
Rationale:
With this proposal, the addition of a preliminary capstone course
(ARTH 484: Senior Research Seminar I) is requested to augment the
requirement for the B.A. concentration in Art History. Due to the
increased emphasis on undergraduate research in capstone courses in the
Art Department, our students are finding it difficult to complete an extensive
and quality investigation in one semester that is necessary for the required
Senior Undergraduate research paper and related oral presentation. Through the addition of this preliminary course to the existing course ARTH 485: Senior Research
Seminar (proposed to be changed to ARTH485: Senior Research Seminar II), students
would have time to develop their topic much more thoroughly before completing
the final paper. The Senior Research Seminar I and II course sequence would
require students to focus on developing writing and research skills. This sequence of seminar capstone courses would
aid more students in achieving their goals and potentially graduate as University Research Scholar.
