Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 26:                               Add new course, ARTH 302: Internship in Art History

Effective Date: Fall 2009

1.         Add:     On pg. 71, under Courses in Art History (ARTH):

302       Internship in Art History (1-3)

An internship with a participating archive, museum, or gallery arranged individually.

Permission of a supervising faculty member is required.  May be repeated as content varies for a total of 9 hours credit. Fall and Spring.

Impact:

Adding this course to the existing curriculum of Art History within the Art Department will provide students with professional experience related to museum and collections work.  Currently supervised by a full-time professor of Art History as a special topics course, no additional resources will be necessary.

Rationale:

The course will allow students to explore career options and provide opportunities for students to become involved in professional experience as well as enable professional networking between students, agencies, and UNCA faculty.  Numerous Art History students intend to continue in graduate school in Museum Studies. Consequently, the possibility of completing more than one internship would be valuable to their future studies.  A two semester internship can allow a student to work their way into a position that entails a better learning opportunity (e.g., an option to work as an assistant curator would never be offered to the entering intern, but only to those who have previous internship experience). Total credit allowance of 9 hours reflects the multiple and varied internship experiences available to students. Currently, the department partners with seven different galleries, museums, and collections to offer this ongoing course.
