Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 24: Change requirement from a
comprehensive exam to
capstone project for the Minor in
Art History
Effective Date: Fall
2010
1. Delete: On
pg. 67, under Minor in Art History:
II. The
Art History minor requires students to pass the comprehensive exam given by the
department each semester. With the approval of the Art History advisor,
students may complete a research project instead of the comprehensive exam.
Add: On pg. 67, in place of
deleted entry:
II. The Art History minor requires students to
complete a departmentally approved research project in Art History.
Impact:
The Art Department is
shifting students away from comprehensive exams to push capstone research
projects that will prepare students for future art-related professions and/or
graduate school. Students minoring in
Art History will be required to complete a departmentally approved research
project in Art History.
Rationale:
Students will be better
prepared at graduation if they complete a Senior Undergraduate Research
Project. This project may be used as a
writing sample for graduate school or employment application. Additionally, students will be encouraged to
present their research at UNCA, NCUR, the Big South Undergraduate Research
Symposium or other national conferences on undergraduate research and to submit
their papers for publication in a professional journal.
