Impact:
A
minor offered to all students, including Art History majors, will not impact
current resources significantly. We
offer a sufficient number of Studio Art courses and do not anticipate a need
for further resources.
Rationale:
The
Art Department has recently changed the requirements to allow Studio Art majors
to minor in Art History. This is a
request to allow Art History majors the option to minor in Studio Art. The
study of Studio Art can expand not only the art-related skills for the student
concentrating in Art History but also would enhance the student’s ability to
speak knowledgeably about art concepts and techniques.
The Studio Art minor will
be particularly useful for students majoring in Art History. The incorporation of these additional Studio
Art courses will not only help to expand the student’s knowledge of aesthetic
issues but will also improve their art skills.
Upon graduation, the minor in Studio Art would allow these Art History
students to qualify for a wider range of jobs.
Whether as a Teaching Assistant or eventually as a professor, students
who continue with graduate study in Art History often find it necessary to
address issues of Studio Art in an Art History course. A minor in Studio Art would also be useful
for students who are employed after graduation in art-related professions. The undergraduate minor in Studio Art would
give them the basic practical skills and knowledge useful for work in the
future.
