Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 19: Change studio
hour requirement for B.A. in Studio Art
Effective Date: Fall 2010
1. Delete: On
page 66, under Bachelor of Arts, in item I:
6 additional studio hours in one
medium; 3 elective studio hours.
Add: On
page 66, in place of deleted entry:
9 additional studio hours in one
medium.
Impact Statement:
There will be
little impact on the resources and staffing of the Department of Art due to
this change in that advanced courses in all areas (for example Painting II, III
and IV) are already offered each semester.
Course enrollments will increase only slightly in the level IV courses
since many B. A. studio majors already choose the level IV course as their
studio elective. No new equipment or space will be needed at this time to
accommodate this change.
Rationale:
Our primary
goal in seeking this change is to ensure that B. A. studio majors are well
prepared for the capstone course (B. A. seminar) and the graduation requirement
of a solo exhibition in one medium. Although some B. A. art majors elect to
take the “3 elective studio hours” in their area of concentration, many do not.
The art faculty has found that those who complete 9 hours in one medium are
generally more prepared for the capstone course. Although we want our students to experience
both breadth and depth in the B. A. studio degree and the B. A. studio with
teacher licensure degree, we feel that 9 hours in one medium beyond the
introductory courses is a reasonable requirement.
