Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 15: Change requirements for
Earth Science Licensure concentration
Effective
Date: Fall 2010
1.
Delete: On page 135, item II under Earth
Science with 9-12 Teacher Licensure:
II. Required courses in Earth Science Core—26–28
hours: ENVR 105, 106, 320, 338, 385.
7-9 hours chosen from ATMS 103, ASTR
105, ENVR 310, 331, 362, 383, 384, and PHYS 131 or 221.
Add: On page 135, in place of deleted
entry:
II. Required courses in Earth Science Core—26
hours: ENVR 105, 106, 320, 338, 385, ASTR 105; ATMS 103 or ENVR 331.
Impact:
There is the possibility of a 2-hour
decrease in the number of required hours, although the choice of classes that
will satisfy those required hours is significantly lower.
Rationale:
The current Earth Science curriculum
was revised last year to take advantage of new Environmental Studies faculty
expertise and to incorporate increased flexibility in the NC Department of
Public Instruction Standards. At that
time, it was thought that the content Standards did not require courses from
both atmospheric sciences and astronomy, but subsequently we discovered that
indeed, they are required for Earth Science teacher licensure.
Few, if any scheduling conflicts
should arise because ASTR 105 and ATMS 103 are offered every fall and spring,
and ENVR (ATMS) 331 is offered even years fall.
