Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 9: Remove IP
grading designation for CLAS 495
Effective Date: Fall 2010
1. Delete: On
pages 99 and 100, in the course descriptions for CLAS 495:
(IP grades are approved for this
course.)
Impact:
This
proposal may have a beneficial impact on faculty workload, since we will no
longer have to continue to work semester after semester with individual
students who have been delaying completion of their thesis, in some cases
literally for years.
Rationale:
CLAS
495 is now taught as a class each Fall, rather than on an individual basis as
previously done. We are concerned that some students use the IP designation to
delay completion of their thesis indefinitely. By removing this option so that
they can only take an Incomplete, students will be forced to complete their
thesis in a more timely fashion, thus enabling them to graduate on time.
