Impact Statement:
These
changes are not expected to change the current or future staffing needs of the
program or department. Allowing students to self-select the level at which they
register for a dance course will allow students with previous dance training
easier access to courses appropriate to their level. These changes will also
alleviate the need for students to contact hard-to-reach adjuncts whose
electronic overrides are currently required. Finally, allowing students to
self-select levels will alleviate the current, discouraging process of
registration into upper-level technique classes.
Rationale:
Placement
in our technique classes is open to students who have had training at UNC
Asheville or at other facilities. The levels of competence are defined
differently in different settings. A dancer who has taken “Intermediate”
classes in a studio might actually be at an advanced level at UNC Asheville.
Students need to be allowed to self-select their placement and are encouraged
to do so with the guidance of the Dance Program faculty. With these changes,
students will be able to directly register for any level they feel is
appropriate to their background without petitioning for special consideration.
