Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 69: Allow other
courses as option to INTS 499 for major
Effective Date: Fall 2009
1. Delete: On page 176, under Requirements for Concentration in
International Studies, in item I:
3 hours from INTS 499;
Add: On
page 176, in place of deleted entry:
A 3-credit course that produces original research on
a topic related to international studies, approved by the INTS director.
Impact:
Impacts are expected to be limited. Students will be
able to demonstrate major competency through options other than completion of
INTS 499. This may lead to a modest increase in the size of research classes
across the disciplines but since INTS majors have interests across a broad
range of disciplines, the increase is unlikely to fall heavily on any one
department. In any case, students with double majors are the ones most likely
to pursue this option and would be required to take the course for their second
major in any case, further limiting the expected enrollment increase caused by
this change.
Rationale:
Because INTS is an interdisciplinary major, a single
faculty member cannot possibly have expertise in the content and methods that
all of the INTS majors might pursue. Thus, INTS majors are encouraged to find
faculty advisors and academic support in the disciplines most consistent with
their own research goals for the senior project, and to use this research to
support major competency.
