Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 49:                               Add new course, MGMT 401, International Marketing;

Add MGMT 401 to the Management Concentrations

Effective Date:  Fall 2009

1.  Add:            On page 196, new course, MGMT 401:

401       International Marketing (3)

This course provides a theoretical and conceptual foundation for the study of international marketing.  It introduces the controllable and uncontrollable variables that affect marketing in a globalized world, and examines the marketing mix necessary to achieve an effective international program. Prerequisite:  MGMT 350. Fall.

Impact:

There will be no impact on the resources and staffing in the Department of Management and Accountancy. Two vacant tenure-track marketing positions were filled in Fall 2008; a rearranging of course assignments gives marketing faculty the capacity to offer this additional course. There will be no increase in the number of hours required for management majors.

Rationale:

As part of the Department of Management and Accountancy’s on-going focus on global and international management issues, more content focused on these issues has been added across the curriculum. International marketing has been identified as an area where students, particularly those students pursuing a marketing concentration, need greater exposure. We have been anxious to make this needed change for some time but decided to wait until we filled the two vacant tenure-track marketing positions.

2.  Delete:         On page 191, under Management Concentrations:

Business Management and Administration

MGMT 323; two courses from MGMT 316, 325, 360, 381, 481; MGMT 460 or 464; MGMT 489 or 499.

Marketing

MGMT 357, 453, 458; one course from MGMT 316, 325, 360, 481; MGMT 489 or 499.

Add:           On page 191, in place of deleted entry,

Business Management and Administration

MGMT 323, two courses from MGMT 316, 325, 360, 381, 401, 481; MGMT 460 or 464; MGMT 489 or 499.

Marketing

MGMT 357, 401, 453, 458; MGMT 489 or 499.

Impact:

Adding MGMT 401 to the Management concentrations will have no impact on the resources and staffing of the Department of Management and Accountancy. Total required hours remain the same.

Rationale:

International marketing is appropriate for all management majors, and adding the course to the list from which students in the Business Management and Administration emphasis area can choose is appropriate for a management curriculum.

A course in international marketing is needed in any marketing emphasis area. While the course is an excellent choice for a Management option, it is vital that our Marketing students have a background that will enable them to appreciate the global aspects of marketing.  This change adds the course to the list of requirements for the Marketing concentration.
