Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 41:                                           Add new course, ARTH 301, History of Architecture

Effective Date: Fall 2009

1.   Add:           On pg. 78, under Courses in Art History (ARTH):

                  301       History of Architecture (3)

This course is a survey of architecture from the ancient to the contemporary period.  It focuses on architects, their choice of design, construction methods, and materials.  Students are required to attend local field trips. Even years Spring.

Impact:

Adding this course to the existing curriculum of Art History within the Art Department strengthens the course offerings in the History of Architecture and allows students to focus in this area.   Taught previously as a Special topics course by a full-time faculty member, no additional resources will be necessary.

Rationale:

The course has successfully drawn students from other areas of the UNCA campus and may be appropriate as part of a Topical Cluster.  Centering on traditional architectural forms as well as innovations and experimentation from the ancient period to the present, this course pulls the student into a dialogue with the design and construction throughout the ages.
