Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 33: Change
the descriptions for MAE 310 and MAE 316
Change the pre- and corequisites for
MAE 315
Effective Date: Fall 2009
1. Delete: On page 137, the entry for MAE 310:
310 Heat
Transfer Fundamentals (3)
Analysis
of steady state and transient one-dimensional and multidimensional heat
transfer by conduction, employing both analytical methods and numerical
techniques. Heat transfer by the mechanism of radiation. Prerequisites: grade
of C- or better in MAE 301; grade of C- or better in ECE 220 or MATH 394. Fall.
Add: On page, 137, in place
of deleted entry:
310 Heat Transfer Fundamentals (3)
Analysis
of steady state and transient one and multidimensional heat conduction employing
both analytical methods and numerical techniques. Integration of principles and
concepts of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics to the development of practical
convective heat transfer relations relevant to mechanical engineers. Heat
transfer by the mechanism of radiation heat transfer. Prerequisites: grade of
C- or better in ECE 109 and MAE 301; grade of C- or better in ECE 220 or MATH
394. Fall.
Impact:
There
will be no impact on the resources and staffing of the Engineering program at
UNCA due to this change. This course is presented via distance education from
NCSU. The content of this course remains largely unchanged, but the course
description is being updated to better represent its content. The prerequisites
and corequisites for this course are being updated to reflect current course
sequencing.
Rationale:
The
above mentioned course is part of the Engineering curriculum at NCSU. The
description change is requested to match a change being made to the NCSU
catalog. Making this change to the UNCA catalog will maintain consistency
between the catalog listings for courses included in the JEM program.
2. Delete: On page 137, the entry for MAE 316:
316 Strength
of Mechanical Components (3)
Analysis
and design of mechanical components based on deflection, material, static
vessels and bolted and welded joints. Classical and modern analysis and design
techniques. Computer analysis using the finite element method. Material and
manufacturing considerations in design. Prerequisite: grade of C- or better in
MAE 314. Corequisite: ECE 220 or MATH 394. Spring.
Add: On page, 137, in place of deleted entry:
316 Strength
of Mechanical Components (3)
Analysis and design of
mechanical components based on deflection, material, static strength and fatigue
requirements. Typical components include beams, shafts, pressure vessels and
bolted and welded joints. Classical and modern analysis and design techniques.
Computer analysis using the finite element method. Material and manufacturing
considerations in design. Prerequisites: grade of C- or better in ECE 109 and
MAE 314. Pre- or corequisite: ECE 220 or
MATH 394. Spring.
