Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 32: Change
course descriptions for ECE 200 and ECE 211
Change the pre- and corequisites for
ECE 220
Effective Date: Fall 2009
1. Delete: On page
134, the description for ECE 200:
200 Introduction to Electrical and Computer
Engineering Laboratory (4)
Laboratory
with experiments designed to provide fundamental concepts and an overview of
electrical and computer engineering specialization areas including analog
circuits, communication systems, and signal processing. Experience with
standard laboratory equipment including power supply, multimeter, function
generator, oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer. Prerequisite: MATH 192.
Corequisite: PHYS 222. Fall.
Add: On page, 134, in place of deleted
entry:
200 Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering Laboratory
(4)
An introduction to EE
including: Ohm's law and Kirchoff's laws; circuits with resistors, photocells,
diodes and LEDs; rectifier circuits; and, first order RC circuits. An
introduction to signal processing including: periodic signals in time and
frequency domains, instantaneous, real and apparent power; DC and RMS value;
magnitude and power spectra, dB, dBW, and operational amplifier circuits. An
introduction to analog signal processing systems including amplification,
clipping, filtering, addition, multiplication, AM modulation sampling and
reconstruction. There will be a weekly hardware laboratory utilizing
multimeters, function generators, oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers, and
custom hardware for experiments on various circuits and systems. Prerequisite:
grade of C- or better in MATH 192 and PHYS 221; cumulative GPA of at least
2.50. Pre- or corequisite: MATH 291; PHYS 222. Fall.
Impact:
There
will be no impact on the resources and staffing of the Engineering program at
UNCA due to this change. This course is presented via distance education from
NCSU. The content of this course remains largely unchanged, but the course
description is being updated to better represent its content. The prerequisites
and corequisites for this course are being updated to reflect current course
sequencing.
Rationale:
The
above mentioned course is part of the Engineering curriculum at NCSU. The
description change is requested to match a change being made to the NCSU
catalog. Making this change to the UNCA catalog will maintain consistency
between the catalog listings for courses included in the JEM program.
2. Delete: On page 135, the entry for ECE 211:
211 Electric
Circuits (4)
Introduction
to theory, analysis and design of electric circuits. Voltage, current, power,
energy, resistance, capacitance, inductance. Kirchoff's laws, node analysis,
mesh analysis, Thevenin's theorem, steady state and transient analysis, AC, DC,
phasors, operational amplifiers, transfer functions. Prerequisites: grade of C-
or better in ECE 200; PHYS 222; cumulative GPA of at least 2.50. Corequisite:
ECE 220. Spring.
