II.
Required courses in Earth Science Core—26–28 hours: ENVR
105, 106, 320, 338, 385. 7-9 hours
chosen from ATMS 103, ASTR 105, ENVR 310, 331, 362, 383, 384, and PHYS 131 or
221.
III.
Required courses outside the
major—13–16 hours: CHEM 132 or satisfactory score on
Chemistry Placement Examination; CHEM 111, 145
and 236; MATH 167 or 191; STAT 185; and those requirements indicated under the
Education section of the catalog.
Impact:
The
new course requirements meet the revised and more flexible N.C. Department of
Public Instruction (DPI) standards with three fewer credit hours in
Environmental Studies compared the existing course requirements. Introduction
to Meteorology (ATMS 103) will be part of the advanced electives and will be recommended
by advisors for Education Licensure students, although its content is not
required in the new DPI Standards.
Rationale:
Standards
for science teachers changed relatively recently and have allowed more
flexibility in content requirements for Earth/Environmental Science teachers.
The new concentration fully satisfies all requirements in the Standards, allows
more choices and flexibility for students in the degree program, and reduces
Environmental Studies requirements for them by three credits, compared to the
former degree requirements of the same name.
