page 95, the course description for CHEM 132, General Chemistry:
Introduction
to basic chemical concepts such as atomic theory, periodic properties of
elements, stoichiometry, gas behavior, electronic structure of atoms and
molecules, molecular structure and bonding, solution theory including acid-base
chemistry and aspects of oxidation-reduction, and introduction to chemical
equilibrium concepts. Designed as a first course in college chemistry.
Prerequisite: MATH 167 or higher. Does not count for the major or the minor in
Chemistry. CHEM 111 is suggested as corequisite. Fall and Spring

Introduction

chemistry and aspects of oxidation-reduction, and introduction to chemical
equilibrium concepts. Designed as a first course in college chemistry. Does not
count for the major or the minor in Chemistry. Students should have a thorough
background in high school algebra before they enroll in CHEM 132. Fall and
Spring.
Impact Statement:
This
change will facilitate registering for CHEM 132. While a few students who have
not had prior training in algebra may find themselves enrolled in CHEM 132 at
the start of each semester, the situation can easily be corrected by the
instructors continuing to announce on the first day of class that success in
CHEM 132 cannot occur without an ability to do algebra. Resources will not be
affected by this change.
Rationale:
This
change will allow students to assess their own math experience and skills and
determine if they are ready for CHEM 132. Instructors will remind students at
the beginning of each semester that an ability to do algebra is necessary for
success in CHEM 132. Students who do not have this experience and ignore the
advice of their instructors assume the responsibility of enhancing their
algebra skills in a manner that will allow them to be successful in CHEM 132.
