of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document
6: Change course
description for ATMS 223, Physical Climatology
Effective
Date: Fall
2009
1. Delete: On page 84, the course
description for ATMS 223, Physical Climatology:
Causes of spatial and temporal climate variation,
with special emphasis on energy and water balance regions of the earth and its
atmosphere. Consequences of anthropogenic climate change will be explored. See
department chair.
Add: On page 84, in place of deleted entry:
Causes of spatial and temporal climate variation from
a physical perspective, with special emphasis on energy balance, feedback
mechanisms, and climate modeling. Prerequisite: ATMS 103 or 105. Even years
Fall.
Impact
Statement:
This addition of the prerequisite has no impact on
ATMS majors or minors, as they are required to take ATMS 103 or 105. In
addition, this class is not required for the ATMS degree or minor. There is no
impact at the university level.
Rationale:
On occasion, students from outside the ATMS major
would register for this course without any background in meteorology. Since the
course is taught at a level which assumes at least a fundamental understanding
of physics and the atmosphere, we wish to add the Introduction to Meteorology
course (ATMS 103 or ATMS 105) as a prerequisite. This prerequisite is already
in place in the registration computer.
