Impact:
Many students are already taking 300-level foreign
language classes because they recognize the need for additional foreign culture
and language instruction. It may put
some additional pressure on the 310 language classes since 310 is often a
prerequisite for other 300 and 400-level classes. However, by allowing any 300-level classes to
satisfy the requirement, students will likely distribute themselves over a
range of classes. In any case, there are
generally open spaces available at the 300-level so no additional classes would
be required to meet this need.
Rationale:
The changes increase the foreign language requirement
to include at least six hours (or equivalent) at the 300-level. Students need additional foreign language
instruction at the upper level. In
addition, this document drops the requirement that students take three hours of
INTS 361 or 362. These two classes were
designed in large part to engage students in learning opportunities outside the
classroom. Because we still want
students to have that opportunity, INTS 361 and 362 will continue to be
offered, but the requirement is less necessary because students must now have
an international experience. Dropping
the 361/362 requirement reduces the required hours for the major by 3 credits,
so the total net increase in the required classes for an International Studies
Major, because of the enhance foreign language requirement, is 3 credit
hours.
