of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document
82: Change foreign
language requirement for INTS major
Effective
Date: Fall 2009
1. Delete: On
page 176, under Requirements for Concentration in International Studies, in
item I:
6 hours of
modern foreign language at or above the 200-level.
Add: On page 176, in place of deleted
entry:
Students must demonstrate proficiency
in a foreign language at the 300-level, by either completing six credits at or
above the 300-level or demonstrating advanced proficiency to the International
Studies director. This may require some students to complete additional hours
in a foreign language.
Impact:
This change will not affect the number
of hours most International Studies majors take, since many already take
foreign language classes at or above the 300-level either for a foreign
language major or minor, or for their own interest.
Rationale:
As international studies programs
become more established and as majors seek to distinguish themselves in
preparation for graduate education or the job market, greater demonstrated
foreign language proficiency is desirable. Even if students must take
additional credits to meet this requirement, the credibility of the
International Studies concentration depends on a higher level of foreign
language proficiency.
