Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 34: Change
Management Concentrations
Effective Date: Fall 2008
1. Delete: On page 178, under Management Concentrations, entire
entry:
Business Management and Administration
MGMT 323, 352; one course from MGMT
316, 360, 381, 481; MGMT 460 or 464; MGMT 489 or 499.
Marketing
MGMT 352, 357, 453, 458;
MGMT 489 or 499.
Add: On page
178, in place of deleted entry:
Business Management and Administration
MGMT 323; two courses from
MGMT 316, 325, 360, 381, 481; MGMT 460 or 464; MGMT 489 or 499.
Marketing
MGMT 357, 453, 458; one course from MGMT
316, 325, 360, 481; MGMT 489 or 499.
Impact:
There is no impact on resources. The change will
allow students taking the Business Management and Administration concentration
to choose two options among five courses already in the catalog. It will allow
those in the Marketing concentration to opt for one of four courses.
Rationale:
Each of the options is a valuable course, but each
does not have equal value for all students. Giving students in the more general
concentration a choice among Team Dynamics (316), An Introduction to Health
Services Delivery and Policy (325), Introduction to Entrepreneurship (360),
Quality Control (381), and Leadership in Organizations (481) provides them with
choices that relate to their interests, their perceived weaknesses, or their
possible career direction. Similarly, giving students in the more specialized
Marketing concentration an option to take one of four of these classes provides
the same benefit. There are currently only two concentrations in Management,
and MGMT 352 (Applied Research) is required in each of these; thus, MGMT 352
has been moved from the concentration and added to the General Requirements for
Management.
