Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 21:                                        Addition of MATH 394, Differential Equations to required courses for Pure Mathematics Concentration

Effective Date: Fall 2008

1.         Delete:  On page 195, under Concentration in Pure (Theoretical) Mathematics, item I:

                                       I.      Required courses in the major — 38-39 hours, including MATH 191, 192, 280, 291, 365, 381, 461, 480, 491; and an additional 12-13 hours chosen from STAT 225 and Mathematics or Statistics courses numbered above 300. These latter hours must include either: one from MATH 366, 462, 492; or the sequence STAT 425-426.

Add:           On page 195, in place of deleted entry:

                                       I.       Required courses in the major — 38-39 hours, including MATH 191, 192, 280, 291, 365, 381, 394, 461, 480, 491; and an additional 9-10 hours chosen from STAT 225 and Mathematics or Statistics at the 300-400 level.  These latter hours must include either: one from MATH 366, 462, 492; or the sequence STAT 425-426.

Impact:

Since many majors in the Pure concentration already take MATH 394 as an elective course, the change is unlikely to significantly impact enrollment in any mathematics courses, including MATH 394. There is no change to the required number of hours for the concentration.

Rationale:

Differential Equations, MATH 394 is a required undergraduate course for math majors at most colleges and universities. Knowledge of differential equations is expected of any beginning graduate student. The adjustment in elective hours within the major makes up for the inclusion of an additional required course.
