Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 12: Changes to requirements for Minor in
Classics
1. Delete: On page 92, the entry
under Minor in Classics
A
student may minor in Classics with either a Greek or a Latin emphasis.
Greek emphasis: 18 hours
beyond the introductory level including CLAS 211; 15 hours from
courses in Greek or courses
in Culture.
Latin emphasis: 18 hours
beyond the introductory level including CLAS 212; 15 hours from
courses in Latin or courses
in Culture.
Add: On page 92, in place of deleted entry:
A student may minor in
Classics with an emphasis in Greek, Latin or Classical Studies.
Greek emphasis: 18 hours beyond the introductory
level including: CLAS 211; 12 hours from courses in Greek; 3 hours from courses
in Culture.
Latin emphasis: 18 hours beyond the introductory
level including: CLAS 212; 12 hours from courses in Latin; 3 hours from courses
in Culture.
Classical Studies emphasis: 18 hours including:
either CLAS 211 or 212; 15 hours from courses in Culture or other electives
substituted with prior approval of department chair.
Impact: None. All the courses
included in the minor are already in existence. We may acquire a greater number
of formally declared Classical Studies minors.
Rationale: Since we now have a
concentration in Classical Studies, which de-emphasises Latin and Greek in
favor of Classical culture, it is logical to allow the possibility of minoring
in Classical Studies as well. In addition, the requirements for our current
minors in Latin and Greek are worded rather vaguely and we wanted to make
explicit our requirement that the majority of the minor should involve courses
taught in the original language.
