Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

FWDC 8:           Proposal to rename the Feldman Committee, Revise Membership and Duties
(Revision of SD2990S and SD0988F; Faculty Handbook Section 10.3.4)

Effective Date:  Immediately

To Proposal will:

·         Rename the Feldman Professorship Review Committee to the Faculty Scholarship and Service Awards Committee.

·         Replace the two members from the University Teaching Council with two members from the University Service Council.

·         Adds two duties:

o        To select one of the ranked full-time faculty members to receive the annual Distinguished Scholarship Award.

o        To select one of the ranked full-time faculty members to receive the annual Distinguished Service Award.

Rationale:
This will increase efficiency of determining these three awards and will ensure that one person does not receive both the Feldman Award and either the Distinguished Scholarship Award or the Distinguished Service Award.  The name change reflects the new responsibilities.

It is appropriate that the Faculty Scholarship and Service Awards Committee membership include members of the University Service Council.  The duties of the University Teaching Council do not currently include serving on the Feldman Committee.  This document corrects that oversight.

1.  Add to Handbook Section 10.3.4 the bold/italic text below:

Faculty Scholarship and Service Awards Committee

Purpose

1. Select two of the ranked full-time faculty members for receipt of the Ruth and Leon Feldman Professorship Fund prize. This award will honor those faculty who have excelled in one or both of the following fields:

            A.  Demonstrated competence in the areas of teaching, research and published writings, and

B.  Service to the community and to UNCA.

2. Select one of the ranked full-time faculty members to receive the annual award for distinguished scholarship.

3. Select one of the ranked full-time faculty members to receive the annual award for distinguished service.

Membership
Six full-time faculty serving two year staggered terms that run from September 1 to August 3.  Three new members shall be selected each year: one from Faculty Welfare and Development Committee, one from University Research Council, and one from University Service Council.  Chairs of these respective committees shall consult to assure all the broad academic areas are represented.  Members of the review committee shall elect their own Chair.  In making its decision, the review committee shall be free to consult with students, community people, or others who may assist the committee in making its decision.

Procedures

The faculty shall be invited by the Senate to submit written and signed nominations by March 1 specifying the past accomplishments which recommend an individual's nomination for any of the three awards. These nominations shall be in keeping with the terms of the respective awards criteria.

Nominations shall be reviewed by the Faculty Scholarship and Service Awards Committee. In making its decision, the review committee shall be free to consult with students, community people, or others who may assist the committee in making its decision. In addition, nominations received during previous years as well as candidates from within the committee deliberations may be included in the review.

After its decision, which shall be kept confidential until the public announcement, the review committee, no later than May 1, shall inform the VCAA, who shall make arrangements for bestowing the awards at the final spring faculty meeting. Recipients of the awards will be listed in the UNCA catalog in a section describing the Ruth & Leon Feldman Professorship Fund, Distinguished Scholarship Award and Distinguished Service Award.
