Impact Statement:
There should be little if any impact, with the possible exception of increased attention to these courses
among students interested in the AFST minor.

Rationale:
Since Fall 2006, an AFST Task Force has been reviewing the history of this program and its leadership,
including its historical mission, its current mission and identity, its past and present curricular focus, issues of student audience and past enrollment, along with a number of other issues pertaining to the program’s future.  The task force has been led by Dr. Edward Katz, Dean of University Programs, with as many as 10-12 faculty and staff attending meetings twice each month.  This semester the task force is continuing its work, focusing on possible curricular changes, co-curricular issues, and future program leadership.  One of the first areas of need that the group identified, however, was for an update of the list of electives for the minor, which was out of date, and for adding courses that engage themes and issues directly related to African Studies, which were not included among the original courses.  The task force is eager to experiment with an expanded list for the next 2-3 years, believing that it will provide a better sense of student interest in Africana content and will assist in recruiting students into the minor.  Thus, a revised and expanded list of electives is an initial step in a larger strategic process of engaging the future development of AFST.
