Statement of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 59: Add new course, INTS 354, The Nuclear Dilemma
Effective Date: Fall 2008
1. Add: On page 165, before description for INTS 361:

Students explore the technological, economic, social, political, and legal challenges posed by the proliferation of nuclear technology and weapons over the last fifty years, and examine the historical and contemporary efforts of the international community to address these challenges. Spring.
Impact:
Adding the course should have little impact. This class has been successfully taught as a special topics course for several years now. It will fulfill an elective requirement for INTS majors and minors.
Rationale:
This is a truly interdisciplinary class addressing some of the most significant legal, ethical, and technological issues of our age. It has been taught several times as a special topics and needs to become a regular part of the curriculum.
2. Add: On page 164, section II, A, 2, in the listing of courses fulfilling the International Law and Human Rights requirements, before PHIL 214;
INTS 354;
Impact:
This addition should have only a positive impact, adding a new option for students interested in the International Law and Human Rights emphasis of the International Studies major concentration to reflect new additions to the catalog with a modern international focus.
Rationale:
This interdisciplinary class is an appropriate addition to this emphasis area because it focuses on international legal efforts to manage the numerous threats associated with nuclear waste and nuclear weapons and adds a significant new option to this emphasis area.
