Statement
of Faculty Senate Action:
APC Document 24: Change required courses for the concentration in Art History
Effective Date: Fall 2008
1. Delete: On pg.
62, under Bachelor of Arts with a Concentration in Art History, Items I, II and
III:
I.
Required
courses in the program—36 hours: ART 100; either ART 101 or 103; ARTH 201, 202,
480; 12 hours of 300-400 level ARTH courses with at least 3 hours from Ancient
and Medieval art history ; 3 hours from Renaissance and Baroque art history; 3
hours from Modern and Contemporary art history; and 3 hours from Non-Western
art history.
II.
Required
courses outside the major—9 hours of approved courses from outside the
department related to one of the following periods or areas of interest:
Ancient/Classical; Medieval; Renaissance to 18th Century; Modern/Contemporary;
Non-Western; or Theory/Criticism (see Art Department Guidelines).
III.
Other
departmental requirements:
a) Senior competency is demonstrated by
either passing the Art Department Comprehensive
or completing an Undergraduate Research Project in Art History. These
are offered every semester.
b) Each degree candidate must
demonstrate both oral and computer competency by successful completion of ARTH
480.

Required

400-level. Courses from other departments may be substituted
with prior approval of the department chair. Of the 21 elective hours, 3 hours
must be chosen from Ancient and Medieval art history; 3 hours from Renaissance
and Baroque art history; 3 hours from Modern and Contemporary art history; and
3 hours
from African, Asian and Latin American Art History.

Impact:
The
Rationale:
As worded at present, Art and Art History courses
cannot be used for the 9 hours of approved elective courses. By requiring Art
History students to take more Art History courses to fulfill their major,
students completing the requirements for the concentration will be better
prepared for a related job.
