of Faculty Senate Action:
1. Add: On page 226,
Special Topics courses for Portuguese:
171-3, 271-3, 371-3, 471-3 Special
Topics in Portuguese (1-3)
Courses not otherwise included in the catalog but for
which there may be special needs.
May
be repeated for credit as subject matter changes. See department chair.
Impact: The addition of this option
will allow for greater flexibility in the offering of courses in Portuguese.
The impact on the resources and staffing of the Department of Foreign Languages
will be minimal. As regards instructional labor, the Department is able to
carry out its full program with this addition. As regards resources, there may
be some pressure on Ramsey Library both for ABC/Interlibrary materials and also
for materials purchase, especially in the area of contemporary
Rationale: A number of students have expressed interest in additional study of
Portuguese language and the cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world. This
request for Special Topics courses in Portuguese will strengthen the
University’s ability to offer language-learning options in Portuguese, the
world’s seventh most spoken language.
