Statement of Faculty Senate Action:

APC Document 24:     Licensure in Social Studies

Effective Date: Fall, 2000
  1. Secondary (9-12) Licensure in Social Studies

Delete: on page 99, under the heading of "First Area of License" section (c).

Replace: the deleted section with the following:

(c) Secondary Education (9-12) Biology, Chemistry, English, Latin, Mathematics, Physics, Science, Social Studies;

Impact: None anticipated.

Rationale: This change corrects the Catalog and reflects the actual advising and licensure that students receive who major in History. Students who major in History and complete the requirements under the teacher licensure section of the History section of the Catalog are licensed in Social Studies, not History.

Delete: on page 120,

under the heading "History with Teacher Licensure"

the sentence " Students desiring History with teacher Licensure…Department."

Replace: the deleted section with the following:

Students desiring History with Teacher Licensure in Social Studies should complete the following program, review the requirements found in the Education section of the Catalog, and consult with the appropriate advisor in the Education Department.

Impact: None anticipated.

Rationale: This change clarifies to the student that there are also requirements in the Education section of the Catalog that they will need to complete.

Delete: on page 120, under the heading "History with Teacher Licensure" section II.

Replace: the deleted section with the following:

II. Required courses outside the major-9 hours: ECON 101 or 102; POLS 220; ANTH 215, or SOC 221 or 240.

Impact: None anticipated.

Rationale: Since EDUC 130 is listed in the Education section of the Catalog, it is inconsistent to mention it here and not other EDUC courses.

Delete: on page 190, under the heading "Sociology with Teacher Licensure" section II.

Replace: the deleted section with the following:

II. Required courses outside the major--12-18 hours: ECON 101 or 102; HIST 101, 102; POLS 220. Students who have not received credit for the Humanities sequence must also complete HIST 151 and 152.

Impact: None anticipated.

Rationale: This change corrects the Catalog to reflect what has always been required. Somehow this error crept into the Catalog without being formally approved, and it never reflected actual practice.

  1. Other Changes

Add: on page 99, under the heading "Recommendation for Class A Licensure Requirements":

5) successful completion of a portfolio of advanced competencies in educational technology.

Impact: None anticipated.

Rationale: The portfolio is already listed in the Catalog as a requirement. This change is to clarify for the student what all of the requirements for licensure are in one list.
