THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 3298S Date of Senate Approval 5/7/98 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 25: Creation of Art Seminar and Revision of the Bachelor of Arts Emphasis Effective Date: Fall, 1998 Add: on page 71 the following Art 475 B.A. Seminar (3) B.A. Seminar is the capstone studio course for B.A. candidates. The Senior Exhibitions work is completed with weekly critiques from faculty and peers. Journal required. Prerequisite: The completion of the B.A. six sequential hour studio concentration requirement. Offered every semester. Delete: on page 66 the heading and description for the section titled "Bachelor of Arts". Replace: with the following Bachelor of Arts in Art The Bachelor of Arts in Art provides students with a breadth of technique and concept as well as concentration in one studio area. The student pursues art history interests and must engage conceptual and technical achievements to express personal interpretations of themes in visual media. The required Senior Exhibition insures that each student will complete a body of work for a portfolio for professional career purposes. The Exhibition allows each student to present their first public Solo Exhibition. I. Required courses in the program-42 hours, including ART 100, 101, 102, 103 (foundation core); 475, either 210 or 220; one course from 225, 230 or 240; 12 hours from the art history offerings, 6 additional studio hours in one media, 3 elective studio hours. II. Required courses outside the major-none (See Guidelines for general education suggestions.) III. Other departmental requirements: a. Prior to graduation the degree candidate must present a Solo exhibition. (see Guidelines for exhibition requirements.) b. Each degree candidate must pass the Senior Competency Exam and take the Area Competency Achievement Test in Art. These are offered every semester. c. Public presentations are required for both art history courses and critique defense. These presentations satisfy the university's oral competency requirement. Impact: Art 475 B.A. Seminar is a new course which will be taught by regular faculty on a rotation basis. In addition to Art 475 the faculty member will direct all aspects of the Senior Exhibitions courses which include Art 490, Art 491 and Art 492. Typical enrollment in these courses is 12 to 15 students per semester. There will be no impact on other programs or departments or on staffing needs within the department. The addition of Art 475 will impact assessment in that it will add a significant level of review for B.A. candidates prior to their graduation. Rationale: a. The number of total hours for the B.A. degree is changed from 40 hours to 42 hours. As it is now students take 42 hours to complete the B.A. since all the art courses are three hour credits. This change is a more honest, up front calculation of required credits. b. We have added Art 225 (Photography I) in the 200 level course selections to allow those students doing Photography as a concentration to begin their concentration at the 200 level which is already available for all other concentrations. c. We are requiring, in addition to the 200 level courses required, 6 sequential hours in one media to better prepare students for their Senior Solo Exhibitions. d. B.A. Seminar has been added to the requirements for the B.A. candidate. This will allow B.A. students to have faculty and peer review of their Exhibition work and will better assure their direction as they move toward a Solo exhibit. This will allow B.A. students to work exclusively on their show for a full semester.
