THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 3098S Date of Senate Approval 4/9/98 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 24: Clarification of Requirements for a Minor and a Post-Baccalaureate Major Effective Date: Fall 1998 Delete: p. 43 Under "Optional Minor Field of Concentration", the second sentence, first paragraph which reads: "Minors shall require a minimum of six semester hours at the 300-400 level to be taken at UNCA." Replace: with the following One-half of the hours required for the minor must be completed at UNCA. In addition, minors shall require a minimum of six semester hours at the 300-400 level to be taken at UNCA. Add: on page 44 under "Declaration of Optional Minor", after last sentence, second paragraph the following: Once a student has earned a minor in a particular department and graduated with that minor designation, he or she may not later earn a major in that same department. Impact: None. Rationale: The first change is the current requirement as outlined on page 30 under "Graduation", item #11. Restating the requirement under the Minor heading will help to ensure the student is aware of the requirement. The second change clarifies and puts in writing the current practice. Once a student graduates, the academic record is "official" and "sealed" and there should be no changes made to it. A student could not have a major listed on a transcript in an area where a minor had been previously earned. Add: on page 49 item #2 under the heading "Post-Baccalaureate Major" item 2, page 49 at the end of the sentence beginning; "The University grants..." the following: other than UNCA. Delete: on page 50 under the heading "Post-Baccalaureate Major" item 2, second sentence. Replace: the deleted sentence with the following "Normally a minimum of 30 semester hours earned after the baccalaureate degree is awarded is required for this certificate." Impact: the addition of this statement puts in writing what has been practice for many years. Rationale: A recent miscommunication between an academic department and a student pursuing a Certificate of Major served to illustrate that this section of the catalog is not as clear as it should be regarding the post-baccalaureate course requirements.
