Impact Statement: No changes in the program for Social Studies Licensure with a major in Economics, Political Science, Sociology, or History or in future staffing needs. Rationale: The proposed changes not only clarify for students what majors can satisfy Social Studies Licensure requirements, as on record with accrediting agencies, but make the style of description consistent among all. Currently, the only place these requirements are explicitly stated is under the History Section of the Catalogue. E. Delete: on page 129, Part I, under the heading Program in Social Studies Licensure and after "Required courses in the Major", the following "315" and "five additional 3-semester-hour courses". Replace: with the following "six additional 3-semester-hour courses." Add: to the end of the same section the following statement HIST 315 is required for students seeking either K-6 or 6-9 licensure. Impact Statement: The change does not affect the number of hours required for a History major or the number of hours required for Social Studies Licensure. It merely removes History 315 as a requirement for 9-12 Social Studies Licensure. No future staffing needs anticipated. Rationale: HIST 315: North Carolina History is a competency required for only those who will teach grades 4 through 8. North Carolina History is not taught in grades 9-12. F. Add: on page 108, under the heading Program for Elementary School (K-6) Licensure, Section I, in the second line after the number "344", the number "345 Impact: This change will not affect major, minor, or university requirements and will not necessitate staffing changes. Rationale: At UNCA, social studies methods and geography methods have been compressed into a 4-hour class for K-6 Licensure. Thus, each semester, post-baccalaureate and transfer students who have had either a geography course or a social studies methods course have had to be accommodated with Independent Studies for one or the other. Creation of two separate courses will provide smoother registration for these students as well as make record-keeping cleaner.
