THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT ASHEVILLE FACULTY SENATE Senate Document Number 2298S Date of Senate Approval 3/12/98 Statement of Faculty Senate Action: APC Document 16: Modifies Description of the Humanities Program and Humanities 214; Changes the Title and Number of Humanities 224 and the Titles of 214 and 414; Adds Special Topics Courses to the Humanities Listing. Effective Date: August 1998 A. Delete on p. 135 under the title, "Humanities," in the first paragraph after the listing of faculty the second sentence. Impact Statement: none. Rationale: This description is more accurate. B. Delete: on page 47 and on page 136 the Course Number and Title for Humanities 224. Replace: with the following number and title: 324 The Modern World: Mid-17th to Mid-20th Century Impact Statement: Increased enrollment in HUM 224 since community college transfer students will not be able to receive transfer credit. Rationale: 1. The new title is more descriptive of the course and responds to the Registrar's request that we clarify the distinction between "Modern" (in Hum. 224[324] title) and "Contemporary" (in Hum. 414 title) which can lead to confusion for those evaluating the transcripts of our students. 2. The number change more accurately represents the skill level expected in this course. (See: "UNCA Humanities Program--Skills Committee Report," 1995.) Each course, in sequence, requires a higher level of performance in a number of specific areas such as levels of abstract thinking, critical writing and discussion skills, analysis, and synthesis. 3. Directly encourages students to take only one Humanities course per year which allows them to experience this core general education program in each year of a traditional four-year degree program. It also increases the likelihood they will take them in the sequence most beneficial to their learning thus providing a smoother continuity of synthesized knowledge. 4. Increased likelihood that students will have completed the prerequisites (which are unchanged): HUM 124 and 214, LANG 101 and 102, LR 101 or 102. C. Delete: on p. 136 the title and course description for Humanities 214 Replace: with the following HUM 214 The Medieval and Renaissance World The early Middle Ages to the end of the reformation in the context of selected world cultures. Prerequisites: HUM 124, LANG 101 and 102, LR 101 or 102. Fall and Spring. Make the same change in the course title on page 47. Impact Statement: None. Rationale: This course, which began thirty-two years ago as a Western Culture course, is no longer so. The course now being taught is described more accurately by this change. While maintaining its emphasis on the Western heritage (i.e., "medieval" and "renaissance") of many essential aspects of American culture and society, the new title reflects the openness of this course to inclusion of non-Western materials.) D. Delete: on p. 47 and p. 136 the title of Humanities 414 Replace: with the following The Individual in the Contemporary World Impact Statement: None. Rationale: This new title is more descriptive of the course as it is now taught, and as it has been taught for (at least) the last 16 years. E. Add on p. 136 below the description of HUM 414, the following: 171-6, 271-6, 371-6, 471-6 Special Topics in Humanities (1-6) Courses not otherwise included in the catalog listing but for which there may be special needs. May be repeated for credit as often as permitted and as subject matter changes. On demand. Delete on p. 136 the first sentence in the paragraph immediately following the heading "Minor in Humanities" Replace the deleted sentence with the following Twenty hours of courses in the Humanities, including HUM 324 and 414 and 12 hours of courses in addition to major and General Education requirements chosen from more than one department. Humanities Special Topics courses may be included with permission of the program director. Impact Statement: Proposal would affect only those students wishing to take additional and occasional Humanities courses as electives, or toward the Humanities minor. Rationale: Instructors wishing to offer interdisciplinary Humanities courses may do so with permission of Director of Humanities. Students wishing to pursue a minor in Humanities will have a greater range of courses from which to choose.
